Vika – Classical Piano Covers of Heavy Metal Classics

9 Jan

Vika is just amazing. I’ve only just been alerted to her vast talent thanks to a very erudite piece over on Invisible Oranges about her cover of Sepultura’s Kaiowas.

Vika is a classically-trained Ukrainian pianist based in Amsterdam, whose hobby is reimagining classic metal for classical piano. The covers are really interesting as she very creatively adapts and adds to the music.

There’s a whole slew of videos on her Youtube channel and you can take your pick from vintage Metallica and Slayer to NIN and System of Down (there’s no accounting for taste…).

Two of my favourites are of stone cold metal classics: Metallica – Master of Puppets and Slayer  – Reign in Blood.

This is intro on the Slayer cover is just brilliant…

What’s your favourite?

The Raining Blood cover sounds like Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor (and I love the way the keyboard trembles when he plays the chorus).

Thanks for the kind words about the layout. The last one was a bit teenage really! You’re right though, Vika is a very physical piano player and she really hammers the keys, albeit in a very surgically precise way. I know almost nothing about classical music but that’s really interesting that a proto-death metal anthem could recall Bach when transposed to more typically classical instrumentation.
