Zack de la Rocha – Digging for Windows

16 Sep

It takes a couple of listens to hit home but when it does, my goodness me. ZDLR has learned how to rap at some point in the past whatever. This shit sizzles.

The beats are degraded and nasty… just how I like them. The thought of a whole album of El-P beats and Z raps makes me tumescent to say the least.

Oh and by the way, I may have been away for three years but I never went anywhere…

Spot the hilarious joke….

Don’t be fooled, while there’s not much metal on this list, I’m not going soft. I’ve been hammering MDG favourites Book of Black Earth and Balaclava this past week.

*Masculinity assured, he stops swinging it around and slips back where it belongs*

Yet there’s been plenty of time for non d-beat at MDG Towers. I know. Shit’s craycray, huh?

I have also created a Spotify playlist so you bastards can have a listen. Not that you’ll bother, you James Blunts (that’s cockney rhyming slang my beloved American readers… you work it out).

Song of the Week: Schoolboy Q – There He Go

4 Mar

It’s been so long since any new hip-hop blipped my radar.

I’ve always hated rap, preferring independent hip-hop, particularly the dusty crate-digging style that eschews that “get money, get hos” philosophy for something a little more noble.

So I should hate Schoolboy Q with all his sex, drugs and gang-banging shtick. But man, his flow is so mesmerising and the beats so innovative and downright and irrepressibly bumpalicious that I am hooked.

On My Turntable: Fucked Up; Ed Sheeran; The Ominous Order of Filthy Mongrels

Turntables

I wheel this around on a trolley wherever I go

It’s that time again kids, where the Monkey shares the spoils of his sonic adventuring to create a bite-size buffet of aural delights.

That or I just tell you what I have been listening to lately and say whether I liked the cut of its jib.

This week, it’s been my favourite post-hardcore hucksters Fucked Up; Ed motherfucking Sheeran (no shit) and The Ominous Order of Filthy Mongrels.

Classic Hip-hop: Edan – Beauty & The Beat

Edan - Beauty and the Beat

I'm the educated rebel with the heavy metal flavour

This is quite possibly my favourite hip-hop album of all time. I shit you not.

There’s never been anything quite like it before or since and it irks me greatly that Edan dropped this like an atom bomb, splattering my brain in 2005 and has yet to follow it up. Gah.

Kaleidocopic 60s pysch-pop fed through an echoplex is welded onto a classic hip-hop chassis and driven by some seriously snarly rapping that eschews the usual, tired shit for surreal wordplay deeply steeped in hip-hop and rock history.

Oh and it seriously bumps.
